Taking a proactive role

Since opening our doors in 2007, Ala Kuola has provided assistance to hundreds of individuals and families affected by domestic violence and abuse. Throughout the years, we’ve seen how domestic violence and its consequent problems have become more prevalent in Hawaii. This has led us to seek a more proactive role in serving domestic violence victims, which we’ve found in the Athletes as Leaders and Coaching Boys into Men programs.

Since the launch of Athletes as Leaders, thousands of coaches around the world have signed up in support. Over the course of a season, Athletes as Leaders mentors lead their players through brief weekly activities that address themes such as Challenging gender stereotypes, Healthy Relationships, and Standards of Beauty.

What is Athletes as Leaders?

Athletes As Leaders is a program for high school athletes on girls’ sports teams.  The program aims to empower student athletes to take an active role in promoting healthy relationships and ending sexual violence. Athletes are encouraged to be leaders in changing social norms at school (and beyond) to a culture of safety and respect. The program is suggested to be used in conjunction with a prevention program for boys' teams; we recommend Coaching Boys Into Men.  Everyone plays a role in creating a safe community!

Our role

Ala Kuola is currently facilitating the Athletes as Leaders program here in Hawaii. We act as a guide and leader in implementing the Athletes as Leaders program in schools and recreational athletic programs and provide coaches with the tools and training they require to administer the program to their athletes.

Additionally, Ala Kuola is actively consulting with individuals in the community who are well versed in the local language of Hawaii on how to make AAL more culturally competent and in line with the values and beliefs that have been instilled as a result of living in our unique local culture.

Ala Kuola is continuously recruiting schools and community organization interested in implementing Athletes as Leaders. Contact us today if this is something you are interested in being involved in.
